The new issue of W Magazine is out and in it there’s a fab article entitled Phresh out the Runway. It’s all about Balmain’s creative director, Olivier Rousteing, and it documents his whirlwind five year journey through the ranks of the fashion world that have resulted in him becoming the youngest head designer in the history of Maison Balmain.
In the article Rousteing discusses the various sources of his design inspiration and the aspirations he has for the future of the brand. His approach to design as a very simple one- the work he does for Balmain is just about, “Making beautiful clothes…There’s no need to be a torturer.” He also expresses his desire to incorporate more diversity and modernity into the rigid world of French fashion, boldly declaring, “My job is not just to design clothes but to also give a new vision to fashion.”
Which is where the fabulous trio of Naomi Campbell, Rihanna and Iman come in- gorgeous, confident, successful and extraordinarily progressively-minded, they perfectly represent Rousteing’s image of the the modern woman. “These women are inspiring to so many different people…bringing them together represents the concept I’m working toward,” he says.
For this I am thoroughly grateful to Olivier Rousteing. Not only do I love his laid-back approach to haute glamour and his drive to modify and modernize fashion’s restrictive image, but he’s provided me with an overdose of fierce!
RiRi, Nay-Nay and Iman! Together in one editorial!
Oh, and Rihanna is also W’s September covergirl, and stars in a wintery tribal-themed editorial by Mert and Marcus.
